VETS HELPING VETS is an organization of veterans
who have dealt with the VA on many different issues and at many different
levels. It is a group of male and female American veterans from all wars who
want to help their fellow veterans get through the VA bureaucracy without
going crazy. The organization was born when many clients and nonclients of
ABS LEGAL SERVICES got together to talk about the problems and obstacles they
had encountered in trying to get their VA benefits. These veterans knew that
ABS LEGAL SERVICES did not have time to provide sufficient realistic education
about the process and what to expect. VETS HELPING VETS was born to do just
that.
VETS HELPING VETS believe that information and education about the process
is important, but take it one step further: LEGAL ADVOCACY.
ABS LEGAL SERVICES and VETS HELPING VETS are independent of each other; however,
ABS LEGAL SERVICES works with VETS HELPING VETS to inform veterans about their
rights and about the VA process. ABS LEGAL SERVICES puts vets in touch with
one another to share information and to help one another in each one’s
case, whether or not the veteran is a client of ABS.
VETS HELPING VETS is not an organization designed to make a profit but to
help veterans understand the VA process and how to handle it, get through
it and stay sane. The members share ideas with one another and give each other
the benefit of their experiences. They provide invaluable information to each
other.
VETS HELPING VETS is outside any service organization or the VA itself. It
is independent and prides itself on “telling it like it is.” The
organization is in its infant stages and hopes to become a force within the
veteran’s disability community, one that the bureaucrats and politicians
will heed. After all, with the world situation as it is, there will be ever
continuing numbers of veterans and VETS HELPING VETS wants to make sure that
all veterans are treated fairly and receive what American law has promised
them.
